Areas of Emphasis

LSTC’s emphases highlight the seminary’s strengths and commitments. Emphases may be pursued within a degree. Each emphasis is directed by a particular member of the faculty and has been approved by the whole faculty.

LSTC’s rich urban, multicultural environment makes it an ideal place to explore and gain skills for the practice of urban ministry. LSTC’s doctoral program in biblical studies has provided unique opportunities for students who desire to do concentrated study in Bible from beginning to advanced levels. In addition, LSTC is one of the leading seminaries in the United States for the study of religion and science and environmental ministry. An interfaith emphasis equips students who desire to develop knowledge about and skills for interfaith dialogue. The newest emphases highlight ministry in particular contexts: the Hispanic emphasis and the African American and Asian descent emphasis.

Students can also create an emphasis in nearly any field of theological study, with the permission of their academic advisor and utilizing coursework throughout the Association of Chicago Theological Schools (ACTS) Consortium and/or ELCA seminaries – past examples include but are not limited to theology and art, spirituality, gender studies and youth and family ministry. Students are encouraged to take courses and pursue field experiences not only at LSTC but through the resources of our many partners.
