LSTC is honored to have several faculty members and alumni representing our community at the 2024 annual meetings of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) November 23-26 in San Diego, California. These prestigious gatherings bring together scholars, practitioners, and thought leaders from around the world to discuss groundbreaking research and critical topics in religious studies, theology, and related fields. LSTC’s participation underscores our faculty’s dedication to scholarship that speaks to pressing social issues, celebrates diversity, and inspires transformative dialogue.

Dr. Karri Alldredge will be actively engaged in multiple sessions at the SBL, where she will lend her expertise to discussions on queer hermeneutics, Latin American and Latino/a/e biblical interpretation, and gender and sexuality studies. She will preside over a roundtable luncheon for the LGBTIQ+ Scholars and Scholarship Committee Luncheon for Students and participate as a panelist in sessions covering topics such as “Queering the Prophet,” José Esteban Muñoz’s legacy for biblical studies, and a review panel on marriage in the Bible. Dr. Alldredge’s work in these areas exemplifies LSTC’s commitment to inclusivity and intersectionality in theological scholarship.

Additionally, Dr. Baiju Markose, an LSTC alum, will present his work titled “Emplaced Subjectivity and Arboreal Activism: A Study of Kallen Pokkudan’s Oiko-Autobiography” in the AAR’s Class, Religion, and Theology and Religion and Ecology Units. His presentation, focusing on the intersections of ecology, activism, and social transformation, highlights alternative paradigms that bridge environmental issues with social justice. This work aligns with LSTC’s emphasis on ecological stewardship and advocacy within theological discourse.

Other LSTC faculty members contributing to the 2024 AAR include Dr. Brooke Petersen, who will preside over a session commemorating Trans Day of Remembrance and exploring the intersections of trans studies with psychology and religion; Dr. Christian Scharen, who will present on the theological implications of settler colonialism and Indigenous rights; Dr. Linda Thomas, who will contribute to a panel on womanist scholar Jacquelyn Grant’s prophetic wisdom; and Dr. Marvin Wickware, who will preside over sessions exploring affective politics in academic life. Their participation reflects LSTC’s mission to engage with critical social issues through thoughtful and compassionate scholarship.

We are immensely proud of our faculty and alumni for their contributions to these important conversations at the AAR and SBL. Their leadership and scholarship continue to expand LSTC’s impact, fostering a community where rigorous academic exploration meets a commitment to social justice and advocacy.
