LSTC Announces Fall 2024 Orientation Schedule!
LSTC is thrilled to celebrate our incoming students at our upcoming orientation! This year, we look forward to gathering during the last week in August to welcome our new students into our vibrant community.
Orientation begins on Monday, August 26th, with breakfast at the Life Together Apartment at 1154 E. 54th Place from 8:00 to 8:30 AM. Breakfast will be followed by a University of Chicago shuttle to the main campus. On campus, the day will kick off at 9:00 AM with a warm welcome and registration. Following this, we look forward to a brief morning devotion. At 9:30 AM, new students will engage in icebreakers and introductions with the Student Services and Admissions staff. At 10:35 AM, Pastor Erik will discuss chapel and worship life at LSTC, followed by a session on the Writing Center at 11:25 AM. After a lunch break from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, the afternoon sessions will cover communications, IT, financial aid, and housing. To conclude the day, from 4:00 to 5:00 PM, new students will meet with Cantor Keith Hampton and Vickie Johnson for an introduction to the Gospel Choir and music opportunities at LSTC.
On Tuesday, August 27th, the day begins with breakfast at 8:00 AM followed by morning devotions. New students will then participate in sessions on important campus policies. From 10:15 AM to 12:00 PM, students will have the opportunity to meet faculty and advisors for 1:1 meetings and curriculum introductions. After lunch, students will engage in a panel that speaks to the school’s DEIJ initiatives and institutional values. The day wraps up with an International Student Orientation from 4:30 to 6:30 PM.
Wednesday, August 28th, starts at 9:30 AM with conversation about LSTC library resources, followed by a session on contextual education. Eucharist will be held at 11:00 AM, with a community lunch immediately following. The day concludes with a resource fair from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, where students will connect with representatives from various groups within the LSTC community and the broader Hyde Park neighborhood.
Thursday, August 29th, features a Hyde Park walking tour starting at 10:00 AM, exploring the Life Together Apartment, Katie’s Closet, LSTC Gardens, and the surrounding area. This will be followed by lunch and relaxation at The Point. The walking tour will continue in the afternoon, including highlights from the University of Chicago and the Regenstein Library. There will be free time from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, and an optional trip to the Art Institute of Chicago with Prof. Mark Swanson in the evening.
Friday, August 30th, offers optional excursions including a visit to a mosque at the American Islamic College, a session to learn the Chicago Transit Authority system, and another opportunity to tour the Regenstein Library.
Throughout these activities, we aim to ensure our newest class feels welcomed, informed, and excited about their new chapter at LSTC.
