FAQs
Do I need a bachelor’s degree to be admitted into LSTC?
Applicants must have earned at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college in the United States or a comparable degree from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad. International degrees are evaluated by Admissions staff to determine equivalency. In rare cases, a student may be admitted without an earned bachelor’s.
Can I apply to LSTC if I am not Lutheran? Should I apply if I do not want to be a pastor?
Yes. LSTC offers a community open to students that represent the diverse make of the world around us. We are a reconciling in Christ institution who welcomes all people, regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
Students apply to LSTC programs to prepare for various vocations. In addition to pastoring and deaconship, many alumni have gone on to lead ministries, non-profit organizations, mission critical roles and are staples in their communities.
Is an application required for all programs (MDiv, Affiliate, Audit, TEEM, etc.)?
Yes. An application is required for all students whether they are enrolled for credit or non-credit coursework. Degree earning students are required to submit documents based on an application checklist provided for each program. Non-degree earning students may be required to submit at a minimum a statement of interest and/or an unofficial transcript. Contact the Admissions Office to learn more about the requirements for your application.
Can I get a refund of my application fee?
We are currently waiving application fees for specific master’s programs (MDiv, MA, MAM) and special cases. For programs requiring an application fee, the fee is not refundable. View tuition and fee details here.
How long will it take to get a decision?
The time it will take to receive an admission decision will vary by program. While the Office of Admissions is unable to provide an exact timeline for when a decision can be expected, we will contact you as soon as we learn of the committee’s decision.
Some programs review applications as they arrive and make decisions on a daily basis. Others have review committees which meet a few times during the admissions season communicating recommendations for admissions in batches. For those programs, decisions for admission are made in February; with late decisions coming in May.
I’ve been admitted. What do I do next? How do I register? When is orientation?

Can I defer admission to a future term?
Yes. Students who have been admitted, but cannot attend for valid reasons, may request to defer their admission once within a year of the term of admission. Deferring students do not need to submit a new application, fee, or set of academic credentials.
Incomplete, denied, and canceled applications cannot be deferred.
To initiate the deferral process, contact the program Director/Chair. All deferrals must be pre-approved.
- Note: Financial awards may not be guaranteed for deferred admission.
- The program Chair will forward the deferral request to the Office of Admissions for final approval.
- An admitted application record is maintained for approved deferrals and a new admission letter is sent for the new term.
International Students – If your deferral is approved, you may need to submit new evidence of financial support for the new term. Contact the PDSO to determine if new documents will be needed as soon as you decide to defer.
When do classes start? Do you offer rolling admissions?
LSTC is on a two-semester academic year. We offer a J-Term, a May-Term, as well as some programs over the summer. Classes start in the fall, usually the first week in September. We accept applications throughout the year and admit for Fall. Although it is recommended to start in the fall, in special cases, we may allow a start in the spring. You can view the full academic calendar here.
