Black and African Descent Lutheran Gathering Dinner and Art Exhibit

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago and the Albert and Cheryl Pero Center for Intersectionality Studies are proud to announce the 2023 Black History Month celebration. The theme for this year is Reparations.
This theme was chosen because while significant progress has been made toward recognizing the contributions of African Americans to our history and culture, Black bodies continue to suffer under oppressive regimes, both here in the US and globally. Thus, our shared goal is to pursue justice for all of God’s creation. And, under this theme, our celebration is appropriately titled: “Reparations: Educate, Liberate and Celebrate!” As we attempt to resolve the question, “How do we repair the breach created by decades of harm and oppression?” we prayerfully consider how answers may be found through the pursuit of Educating ourselves to facilitate the liberation of both mind and body for those continually being harmed. And, as we seek Reparations for the millions of BIPOC members who continue to bear the weight of white privilege and supremacy, we anticipate a triumphant Celebration knowing that our God is ever faithful and true.
Historically, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago has never acknowledged the history and legacy of Black Lutherans who contributed to the Lutheran past and future. Therefore, we invite you to participate in the first gathering of Black and African American members of the LSTC community, including students, staff, faculty, and alums. This is an opportunity to celebrate and share all that people of color have contributed to the history and legacy of the Lutheran tradition.
A wine reception will kick off the evening with a viewing of our Black art exhibition. Dr. Linda Thomas, LSTC professor and Director of the Pero Center for Intersectionality Studies, will host the evenings’ events. LSTC Professor Emeriti, Dr. Richard Perry, Jr., will present and lead a discussion on the Past, Present, and Future of Black Lutheranism. Dinner will be served during the presentation.
The BIPOC Reception and gathering is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1, 2023, 5:00-8:00 pm. The event will be held at the LSTC main campus building, Room 350.
This Black History month event is sponsored by the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) in conjunction with the Rev. Dr. Albert “Pete” Pero and the Rev. Dr. Cheryl Stewart Pero Center for Intersectionality Studies at LSTC. Dr. Linda Thomas is currently the Director of the Pero Center. This event is by Invitation Only.
