An Easter Message

Of all the Easter stories, my favorites tell of Thomas and three pilgrims on the road to Emmaus.  Both stories are filled with mystery and unanswered questions. Where was Thomas when the others first experienced the resurrected Jesus?  Perhaps he was out scouting an escape route from Jerusalem. Or maybe buying some provisions? Perhaps paying a pastoral call on the bereaved Mary?  He’s been labeled “the doubter,” but maybe he was the most courageous of all.

And I like that pair who sauntered down the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus on Easter evening. They had bet their lives on Jesus and were groping to find a way forward in their disappointment. I identify with them, having so often failed to see God’s presence right in front of me. But they did beg him to stay, and then “got it” as they broke bread together.

There’s hope for us all, even or perhaps especially the doubters and disappointed ones.  And things go better when we’re in community, breaking bread together often.

Christ is Risen! A blessed Easter!
