Honoring President James Nieman through the Revitalization of LSTC’s Rare Books Room

LSTC President James Nieman at his desk.

As President James Nieman prepares to conclude his remarkable tenure at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, we are launching a special campaign to celebrate his contributions and his legacy.

From November 9, 2024, to February 1, 2025, we invite you to join us in honoring James by contributing to a project close to his heart—the revitalization of LSTC’s Rare Books Room. On February 5, the total gift amount will be publicly announced at President Nieman’s leave-taking ceremony.

This collection, started over half a century ago, holds an extraordinary selection of theological, biblical, and historical texts, many of which have shaped generations of scholars.

Despite its importance, the Rare Books Collection has been under-resourced in recent years. With your help, we can organize and catalog the collection, improve its accessibility, and adapt it for modern educational needs, including asynchronous learning. The goal of this campaign is to raise $250,000 in support of our new initiative. With these funds, LSTC will partner with an expert to ensure the proper care and cataloguing of these texts. The institution also plans to create an online platform for these materials, ensuring their global availability.

Your gift to this campaign will ensure the preservation and enhancement of this unique resource, contributing to LSTC’s future as a leading institution of theological education.

Together, we can celebrate James Nieman’s legacy and provide a gift that will impact generations of scholars. We invite you to use the form below to make your contribution in honor of President Nieman’s dedication to LSTC and the future of our remarkable institution.
