LSTC Celebrates Convocation with a Spirit of Unity and Worship

The Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC) kicked off its 165th academic year on September 4, 2024, with a Service of Holy Communion and Convocation, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter under the theme of a “Season of Creation.” This year’s convocation brought together faculty, staff, students, and the wider LSTC community in a meaningful celebration of faith, collaboration, and the school’s ongoing mission to serve both church and world.

As the service began, Pastor Erik Christiansen, who has served as Pastor to the Community for the last 7 years, offered a warm and inviting welcome, officially setting the tone for the new academic year and symbolically passing the baton of leadership to Rev. Dr. Christian Scharen, who was installed during the service as Associate Professor and the Gordon Braatz Chair of Worship, as well as Director of the Chapel.

President Nieman presided over the service, delivering a sermon that called the community to engage in meaningful conversations about justice, love, and the work of God in the world. His words challenged and inspired all present to embody the disruptive, healing love of Christ in their lives and ministries.

A highlight of the service was the musical leadership provided by Keith “Doc” Hampton and the choir. Together, they led the congregation in song, with the powerful rendition of “Done Made My Vow to the Lord” becoming a moment of deep reflection, unity, and commitment. The music, infused with spirit and soul, connected the community in praise and worship.

With the installation of Rev. Dr. Scharen and the theme of a “Season of Creation,” the service set the tone for a year of growth, learning, and faithful engagement with the world.
