30th Anniversary of “Declaration of the ELCA to the Jewish Community” Luncheon Panel: 1:00 pm CT at 5416 S Cornell Ave, Room 210

Following in the footsteps of the Lutheran World Federation, the newly formed Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) took up the work of repudiating Luther’s anti-Judaism beginning in the early 1990s. The ELCA’s Consultative Panel on Lutheran-Jewish Relations, an advisory body to the Presiding Bishop, built on the foundations of the ELCA’s predecessor bodies. The result was “A Declaration of the ELCA to the Jewish Community,” adopted by the Church Council in 1994. This living document repudiates Luther’s anti-Semitic writings and expresses the church’s longing to be in right relationship with the Jewish community. As we recognize the 30th anniversary of this document, we will hear about the history and context of the document, reaffirm the commitments made in it, and consider personal reflections about what the Declaration has meant and what it means now in our life and work.

Panelists

  • Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, ELCA
  • Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President, Union for Reform Judaism
  • Prof. Esther Menn, Chair, ELCA Consultative Panel on Lutheran-Jewish Relations
